Our TURNING POINT

Fely and I are both engineers by profession. She is an industrial engineer while I am a licensed mechanical engineer. We both worked for multinational companies as senior managers. I had spent more than 25 years of my life in the corporate world and planned to retire from the company where I was working. But despite the fact that Fely and I both earned quite well in our respective jobs,we had chronic financial problems.

We earned well but we spent even better! While we also invested in real properties as well as local and US stocks, they turned out to be liabilities because we didn’t have the proper investment guidance and were not founded on a purpose and a plan. Instead of putting money into our pockets, our investments took money away from us and further strained our cash flow.

Our finances were in shambles and we were heavily in debt. We lived from paycheck to paycheck. Worse, we didn’t take any action since we believed our income from our jobs was a steady stream. Reality hit us head-on one day when Fely was identified to be retired from her job. The monthly income that we relied on to pay for our expenses, liabilities and debts was reduced by almost half.

We were faced with seven-figure debts and our monthly cash-flow was insufficient. What made things worse was that majority of our debts were on credit cards that ballooned with interest. We were in financial and emotional distress. I had sleepless nights, while Fely developed hypertension. We were caught unprepared and uneducated in financial matters.

But God provided us a way out. We frantically searched for financial literacy seminars and books to prepare us for the inevitable. We read books by Bo Sanchez and Robert Kiyosaki, among many others. We attended Bo’s financial coaching seminar. There we encountered IMG-International Marketing Group! It totally broke our poor mindset and financial ignorance. Finally, we made the decision to embark on our journey towards financial freedom and put into action what we had learned.

When we were retired in 2008 and 2009, one after the other,  we thought this was our greatest Career Disaster. But, God has bigger plans for us. What we thought as our downfall became our Turning Point! With our focus and determination to succeed, we were able to pay off our Bad Debts and was able to recover our lost income!

Our mindset conversion, which was the first step in our resurrection from debt, wouldn’t have much impact if we didn’t proceed to the next step: the execution part. You need to act because the “aha” moment doesn’t last long and means nothing unless you put your learning into action.

How do you plan and execute? Imagine building your dream house on weak foundations. What do you think will happen if an earthquake shakes it up? Could your house withstand the tremors? ⦁ Build a Solid Financial Foundation. This concept helped us to prioritize our investment allocations.

⦁ Apply the X-Curve Concept. This is a planning tool that helps you cover the possibilities in life.

⦁ Pay Yourself First. This is the most important concept Fely and I learned that allowed us to have cash flow to fund our solid financial foundation and plan.

Asset vs Liabilities

Many Are Confused About Assets vs Liabilities. 

A major lesson Fely and I learned was about proper appreciation of what real assets are. “Assets are things or property that put money into our pocket.” This definition was taken from Robert Kiyosaki’s bestseller, Rich Dad Poor Dad and it totally changed how we decide to buy anything. Based on this key learning, Fely and I first assess if what we buy will put money into our pocket. If it won’t, then we ask the second question: Do we really really need it or can we live without it? Do we want it for a purpose or out of pride?

Ordinary People With Extra Ordinary Stories!

Can An Ordinary Person Become Great Inspiration?

Three people in IMG injected us with great INSPIRATION! Two ordinary women that started out in this business as ordinary housewives, and our WSB Head Coach, Xuan Nguyen.

Fely and I first met Shirley San Miguel in one of the IMG Training Conventions we attended in our early years in the business. Ma’am Shirley, as we fondly call her, shared her experiences in her mission in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. She told of the plight of Filipino domestic helpers (DH) in Hong Kong who work all their lives abroad but continue to struggle financially when they return to the Philippines. She’s an ordinary housewife who took on the challenge to help change the lives of DHs in that part of the world.

Another lady who continues to inspire us in this mission is Cathy Borja. She started in this business like Ma’am Shirley — ordinary housewife turned full-time missionary. And you will be amazed at how successful she is in her mission. She has built her business across the globe. And yes, she earns very well!

Xuan Nguyen, a Vietnamese refugee in the US, is the person responsible for bringing the IMG business and mission to the Philippines. Fely and I have met him up close and personal. He first set foot in the Philippines as a refugee during the Vietnam War. Fely and I have never met anyone as wise, kind-hearted and mission-driven as he is. He expanded our vision of the business and made us see the potential for big income. But more importantly, he made clear that the main reason for us to do this mission is to change people’s lives — starting with our own families.
